Five Andrews South Carolina men died in a car tanker crash near Wilmington as coroner Dr. Fred Coleman identified all five passengers of the auto.
White House officials expressed irritation at Secretary of Agriculture Benson for not consulting with Secretary of State Dulles before ousting Ladejinsky from Tokyo. The episode sparked a transfer of Ladejinsky to aid Vietnam land reform, while defenders say the security program remains sound and needed no overhaul.
Hubert Harris, 47, a Dallas manufacturer, died after receiving about 160 to 168 pints of blood. Surgeons opened his stomach in a five hour operation seeking bleeding points but found diffused bleeding from multiple intestinal areas. Doctors suggest heart strain or massive hemorrhage as potential causes of the bleeding.
The Senate Investigations subcommittee chaired by Sen McCarthy says the Communist party infiltrated national defense industries. It urges new safeguards to bar suspected saboteurs from defense plants and to require Defense Department security regulations. The report notes no current law allows ousting Communists from nonsecret work and calls for urgent legislation.
Chinese Communist airmen in three types of Russian built planes bombed the Tachens in the largest raid yet on Nationalist territory. The Nationalist Defense Ministry said 38 LAN fighter bombers and 44 light bombers escorted by MIG jets conducted a four wave attack. More than 100 bombs fell between 6 50 a.m. and 2 p.m. One residential area burned and an aircraft possibly was shot down as anti aircraft fire disrupted the raid.

President Eisenhower asked Congress for power to cut tariffs up to 15 percent in a gradual, reciprocal manner to spur growth in the free world. He urged extending the reciprocal trade agreements act and boosting customs simplification while promoting private investment abroad with a 14 point cut in taxes on income earned abroad and deferral of foreign branch tax.

President Gordon Gray called for dedication to truth and cited support from individuals corporations and foundations backing educational television.
Senator Sparkman endorses late August 1956 Democratic convention to shorten the campaign period to about six weeks. Paul M. Butler favors Aug 27. Violence claimed at least twelve lives in North Carolina over the weekend. Injuries and fatalities include Murphy Hubbard 41 of Julian injured when his car overturned near Greensboro Paul Woodard 60 of Norfolk killed in a two car crash on Highway 34 Currituck County and three game wardens hospitalized in Elizabeth City. Others killed include Jack Allen Reeler 25 Connelly Springs Jack Withers 25 Davidson Joe Purnell 29 near Roanoke Rapids Charlie McNeill 27 and Junior Knight 29 Raeford James Farrell 15 Wilmington Bonnie Heath 36 Fair Oaks Guthrie Gladden 61 Marion and Paul Kansas Ford 41 Princeton West Virginia. Several more were in serious or critical condition from separate wrecks across the state.
