Railroad Men Gain Pay Boost in Nationwide Settlement
The pay rise retroactive to December 16 1953 affects 60 000 engine men and firemen across the railroads. Terms mirror earlier agreement with the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, including a five cent hourly bump for December 17 and a 13 cent increment from escalator terms, raising basic pay by 44 cents. Firemen with 15 years service receive an extra week of vacation. Union president H E Gilbert calls the settlement encouraging as talks continue with other unions and mediation handles remaining disputes.
