More Doctors Drafted for Armed Forces in 1943
The War Manpower Commission says 10 000 additional physicians will join the armed forces this year leaving over 80 000 active civilian doctors. Chairman McNutt pledges civilian care with voluntary relocation and reallocation. Dr Frank H Lahey says 80 000 civilian physicians suffice if well distributed and properly used. Over 400 doctors already relocated and more may volunteer. Temporary licensure may be needed for practice in other states. New York must surrender 38.6 percent of its active private practitioners. Recruiting in 1943 to focus on states with large physician shortages. Also notes an ingenious device to test plane instrument accuracy before flight.
