Maxwell Defends Tax Measures Against MacLean Critics
Raleigh January 9 Commissioner of Revenue A J Maxwell a gubernatorial candidate said the 1931 legislature will not cause a large deficit and that the deficit would have been greater if MacLean backed revenue and appropriation bills had become law. He cited similar yields from both bills and noted the enacted plan cut MacLean’s proposed appropriations while lifting other taxes. Maxwell denied the claim that North Carolina needed 30 million dollars from banks, stating year end withdrawals run about 6 million and bonded deposits provide equal relief.
