The December report shows wholesale prices fell 0.4 percent easing inflation pressures while unemployment stayed at 8.3 percent with 7.6 million job seekers. Employment rose 230,000 to 85.5 million as labor force grew by 300,000 led by women and gains spread across industries.

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia declared his candidacy for the 1976 Democratic nomination and will file to enter the West Virginia primary on May 11. He offered himself as a potential darkhorse if a convention deadlock occurs, while staying open to other primaries. Byrd, 57, is Senate majority whip and plans to seek a fourth Senate term.
The Dow Jones average rose 1.42 to 909.40 in first 90 minutes as a powerful year opening rally adds to a 55.57 point gain in five days. The Hirsch Organization calls this the best opening week since 1938 and the market reaches its highest level since November 1973 amid busy NYSE days.
The FDA proposes a ban on DES as a growth stimulant for cattle and sheep after repeated residues found in livers of animals slaughtered for consumption. Congress weighs broader restrictions as officials note the drug can cause cancer in test animals and federal rules already ban DES in meat.
