Martian Grand Canyons Spark Scientist Interest
Pasadena based Jet Propulsion Laboratory reports Mariner 9 images of Martian canyonlands along the northern Solis Lacus region. Canyons 6 to 12 miles wide with smooth floors and walls sloping 10 to 15 degrees resemble the Grand Canyon. Scientists hint at structural origin with erosional modifiers, photo taken from 5,050 miles in orbit and returned Dec 18. Other weekend images show clearer detail as dust storms abate.
