The Hired Hand seen through Biblical themes and one prodigal arc
Film critique by David Poling D D argues The Hired Hand blends western storytelling with strong Biblical motifs. Peter Fonda portrays a prodigal husband returning to a wife who has faced infidelity and public scrutiny. The film echoes Hosea and Deuteronomy motifs with levirate marriage and redemptive forgiveness culminating in Fonda’s death and Oates’ return to the ranch.
