Echo Satellite May Signal Sailboat Space Travel
NASA scientists report the Echo balloon satellite strengthens hopes for solar sail propulsion in space. A 100 foot diameter plastic orb powered by sunlight could unfurl a 1000 square foot sail to speed a spacecraft, reducing rocket energy needs and enabling tacking-like maneuvers in space. Echo, launched last Aug 12, has provided solar radiation pressure data and high altitude atmosphere measurements while remaining a public favorite and remaining aloft for another year or two.
