The region endures a cold winter storm with snow blanketing three states while temperatures dip to around 15 degrees overnight and hover near 25 during the day. Snow began about 10 p m last night, melted briefly, then returned with a steady fall and icy winds. Reports say snow is general across the state and southward, with harsher conditions expected tonight.
Atlanta reports a mix of rain snow and sleet turning Sunny Dixie into a land of slush. From the Ohio and Potomac rivers south through Georgia and Alabama, snow was general in mountains while rain and sleet heavy in foothills and lowlands. Snow flurries spread across the south as transport and communications suffered and streetcars and trains faced delays. Florida remained rainy except Miami where skies stayed clear and warm. Midnight temps stood around 70 with no extreme cold in sight.
North Carolina awoke to snow and ice as a winter whiteout spread across the state. Asheville reported deep slush while Raleigh and Fayetteville saw ice and sleet. Charlotte, Greensboro, High Point and others had two inches or more.
Mrs B S Pearson was moved by ambulance to High Point Hospital today possibly for an operation. She lives on Prospect Road and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
In Rockingham on January 8 AP reports verdicts of second degree murder for Mrs. Sarah Solomon Holmes and her husband J A Holmes in the death of Mrs Holmes' former husband J D Solomon. Each received 15 to 20 years in the state penitentiary. The jury deliberated 19 hours and 12 minutes.
Dr J F Spruill superintendent of Guilford County Tubercular Sanit orium told Kiwanis at the Sheraton that abolishing careless spitting and coughing for two years could nearly end tuberculosis. He defended the sanatoriums role, explained financing, and noted racial disparities in outcomes. He praised board, medical staff, and citizen contributions and called for a new building for at risk children.
Governor McLean released Judge Grady's letter urging a conditional pardon for Thomas E. Cooper. The eight year state sentence stems from the Liberty Savings Bank failure. a federal term runs concurrently for the Commercial National Bank collapse in Wilmington. The proposal ties the pardon to paying 8800,000 to New Hanover County depositors and a lifetime banking ban in the state.
Coast guard crews chase a wrecked hydroplane found by the steamship Alegrete four days earlier near Atlantic City New Jersey. Senate judiciary committee opened its inquiry into the justice department failure to act against Aluminum Company of America amid aluminum industry concerns Secretary Mellon being a large stockholder. Attorney General Sargent led the testimony with Donovan and Van Fleet also called along with Otis Johnson and Millard Hudson.
Budapest dispatch reports investigators estimate over 100000 men linked to a coup plan to crown Archduke Albrecht. Regime figures 37000 regulars under Admiral Horthy plus 25000 gendarmes and 40000 fascists formed the core of the plot. Evidence ties Windisch Graetz and counterfeit notes to financing the effort. Archduke Albrecht disclaims ties to Windisch Graetz. Police say printing presses and metal plates were recovered and melted down. Count Bethlen briefed Regent Horthy who expressed confidence the inquiry will soon conclude successfully.
Col B Frask Cheatham was chosen by Secretary Davis to succeed the late Maj Gen William H Hart as quartermaster general of the army. He is an executive officer for Assistant Secretary of War MacNider and a Tennessee native with World War I combat command in France.
New York January 8 Broadway crowds wondered why Mrs Irving Berlin did not attend Consuelo Vanderbilt and Earl E. Smith wedding yesterday. She stayed with her husband at their West 46th Street apartment guarded by a Russian valet Ivan. Clarence H Mackay, her father, attended with family and criticized her marriage to the Broadway composer last week. The Berlins planned a Atlantic City dinner and Leviathan trip, but remained in New York amid police and traffic control outside their home. The three Broadway celebrity weddings followed within four days.
Robbers struck the Standard Oil distributing station on the Thomasville road about one mile and a half west of High Point. They took checks totaling 209.26, cash 37 and stamps. Entry was gained by breaking a door glass and damaging the safe with tools found nearby. Police L S Deal and W T Neal investigate as clues mount.
High Point merchants favor a plan to close all stores at 10:00 p m each Saturday except drug stores. Richard Reitzel says members support the plan begun by the Ministerial Association to spare clerks from late Saturday hours and encourage early Sunday attendance. Barbers have already shifted to early closing with no loss in income, he notes.
After talks between the governor and Nashville Mayor Theodore E. Ross, the warrant charging the governor with exceeding the speed limit within Nashville was withdrawn. A separate warrant against the governor's chauffeur remained. The governor denied requesting any warrant for his chauffeur.
London reports the Begum of Bhopal donated $25,000 to the British Legion appeal fund after Armistice Day services. Her two granddaughters helped by selling poppies in the streets.
Building Inspector A. B. Horney reported six permits. The Chamber of Commerce will build a one story frame and stucco office and information bureau on N Main and Church at 5000 dollars. H. C. Bynum plans a one story barber shop on Prospect for 300 dollars. Malinda Adderton will erect a four room dwelling on Springfield Avenue totaling 2250 dollars. W. A. Henderson plans a five room dwelling on English street for 1200 dollars. J. R. Purcelle obtains a garage on Lindsay Street for 250 dollars.
John Dawkins, a Negro from Union South Carolina, was executed at the state prison in Raleigh after confessing to the murder of Winston-Salem merchant Joseph H. Vaughn. Two shocks were given. Dawkins read the 23rd Psalm and prayed aloud with chaplain Shacklette and Pastor Bullock before the switch was thrown.
Announcement of the Y W C A annual membership meeting to be held at the association headquarters next Thursday evening January 14 at 8 o clock. Mrs W L Reid president of the Winston Salem Y W C A will give a reading and Miss Vivian Matson will report on the year’s activities. Directors will be elected and a social hour with refreshments follows.
Educational leaders say the eight month term for schools will not be pushed in the 1926 primaries or election. They plan legislative submission in 1928 and seek party backing, aided by statewide public sentiment. Nine counties have voted for eight months, with western Republican counties showing encouragement. The governor has studied school finances and remains cautious.
Asheville and western North Carolina received the heaviest snow in two years with 1.5 inches by 8 am. Snow continued into the day with rain or more snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow.
