Governor Commutes Death Sentence in Sheriff Slaying Case
Raleigh January 8 Governor Bickett commuted Robah Beatty’s death to thirty years imprisonment in the killing of Sheriff Zachary of Yadkin County. Beatty, a World War II era veteran who served with heavy artillery in France, had aided in whiskey manufacturing upon returning home. The governor ruled there was no premeditation and Beatty acted without intent to kill the sheriff who confronted him in the woods with Rev. T. A. Caudle, after Caudle’s party confirmed Beatty’s lack of guilt for murder in the first degree.
