Broadway Star Nita Leigh’s Secret Marriage and Death Plot
In 1915 Nita Leigh wed quietly after a brief romance with a mysterious husband named Mat or Matthew Selim. The marriage ended when he deserted her after a quarrel over her alleged dalliance with producer Benny Steinfeld. A private detective later found no record of Mat in his hometown, and Nita later vanished from the Broadway scene. Penny Crain, a Hamilton model’s daughter, asks for her father Roger Crain’s return amid family disgrace.

Recommend Fixed Taxing Rate For N. C. Theaters
Raleigh reports the theater and moving picture industry in North Carolina should be taxed at a fixed 3 percent of gross receipts with a $60 minimum, replacing the current graduated license tax based on city population. The commission says the industry can bear a larger tax, estimating revenue would rise to about $190,000, with 83.4 percent paid by profitable operations. 29 corporations show mixed results, including holding companies that shift profits via royalties. A three percent fixed tax would address under and over taxation, taxing operating subsidiaries to broaden the tax base.
