D Hiden Ramsey of Asheville announced the 1952 Easter Seal campaign. Ramsey is president of the North Carolina League for Crippled Children which sponsors the effort.
Ervin Collins, 56, of Walnut Cove died in a hospital in Winston-Salem from injuries after the car he rode in skidded off a road and plunged 40 feet down a steep embankment near Walkertown. The State Highway Patrol labeled it the year's first highway fatality.
The Presby terian Synod Council of North Carolina formally announced the naming of an ambassador to the Vatican. Truman Hoey and Willis Smith were mentioned in the report.
A fourth victim of a car truck collision on a foggy highway near Oxford died in a hospital. Patrolmen filed manslaughter charges against the truck driver. Mrs Rose Mary Aul mother of two and wife of a Fort Bragg soldier also died from injuries.
In Chapel Hill on January 5, a U S representative warned that a long-range defense program is essential if Russia or any powerful nation threatens new nations. The speech followed a Forty and Eight Legion meeting held the same evening.
A 46 year old High Point Negro man Marion B. Dawkins of 804 Mobile Street was killed in Winston-Salem when struck by a car driven by Harold Meek of Winston-Salem. Dawkins died of internal injuries after arrival at a hospital. Meek faces manslaughter charges. Dawkins had visited relatives with his wife and 12 year old son nearby.
Capt. Kurt Carlsen finally began towing the stricken Turmoil toward port after five days at sea. A rescue tug and escort ships kept watch as Carlsen's crew and passengers were saved, with reports praising his steadiness and the Enterprise crew’s strenuous efforts to secure the tow line and steer toward Falmouth Harbor.
A petite blonde woman Madelaine Lucy Demers vanished after fishing with husband near Tom's Harbor Bridge on the Florida Keys. Deputy Barker says evidence hints at abduction. planes, police, and boats search the area while husband George LeMay is questioned after fainting at a Miami hospital.
ISMAILIA Egypt Jan 5 Twenty three Egyptians were killed and six Britons wounded over two days of fighting at Suez the British Army reported. An eyewitness said mobs were out of hand with Christians and Muslims clashing amid broader tensions as the water plant and church incidents were reported.
Washington reports sponsors of Universal Military Training unveil a plan for voluntary UMT bargaining to enlist 60,000 men aged 17 and 18 next summer or fall. The scheme, called a tire option, aims to secure approval while awaiting full program deployment under a National Security Training Commission. Critics call it a back door.
Paris dispatch reports Russia seeks to bring Panmunjom armistice talks to the United Nations Security Council, but Western sources say US warnings oppose the plan. A Navy Neptune patrol bomber crashing into a waiting Air Force C47 at Burtonwood Air Base in England killed seven crewmen. The Neptune had returned from a flight to Keflavik Iceland when bad weather forced an emergency landing and the nose of the aircraft ripped off before striking the C47.
United Nations infantry captured a hill north of Yongchon after a 40 minute fight and withdrew on orders after holding ten minutes. The action marked the first cross of the postwar demarcation line by U N forces in strength. Allied artillery pounded the hill with about 1 000 shells as air and naval operations reported heavy activity with multiple aircraft encounters.
A four day AFL tugboat worker strike ends after an agreement with two operators. The union wins a 40 hour work week and wage increases averaging about 25 cents an hour.
Washington officials say raids in the past 36 hours dried up sources supplying more than 18 million dollars worth of illicit drugs yearly. Over 500 suspected peddlers were seized and about 250 undercover agents pressed the operation, aiming to cut the drug trade by half and bring major handlers to indictments within weeks.
