Senator Baggett says he would punish all who don the garb and reports threats against him. In the House Milliken of Union County introduces an anti masking measure as lawmakers join in the effort.
The report alleging a Florida village burned America and sparked a civil clash is denied. The piece notes Hughes's speech cited as final view and mentions inquiries over reparations and a possible international conference in Washington next week to resolve deadlock.

In Melbourne Florida on January 5, R. W. West met A. J. West, long separated after a 57 year gap. Both fought as Union soldiers from Ravenwood West Virginia, enlisting in 1862 and serving in the Virginia infantry. A. J. West,87, and R. W. West,82, plan a family reunion with an elderly Texas pastor expected to join.
Raleigh January report says Governor Morrison accepted the resignation of John C. McPee a Republican state highway commissioner and named A M Kistler also a Republican from Burke County to fill the post McBee resigned after a committee charged him with discrimination against several counties in his district in favor of Mitchell his home county
In Bastrop Louisiana on January 5 a court hearing opened over charges of masked vandalism in Morehouse Parish. Gov John M Parker linked the acts to the Ku Klux Klan. Justice agents and state investigators conducted a three month probe. Judge Odom presided and ordered searches of all courtroom entrants. The session adjourned until 2 PM.
Sixteen members of wage committees for the National Association of Window Glass Manufacturers and the National Association of Window Workers were indicted in Cleveland on Sherman act violations. John M. Stamer, local glass workers president, named in one indictment. Alleged wage pact closed hand blown glass factories nationwide for seven and a half to eight months each year. Grand jury has heard evidence for about a month.
The Esther Dollar carried 400 Chinese bodies to China for burial. Chinese factions in New York had previously halted their warfare to ensure the remains could be returned, and the coffins were loaded secretly to prevent mutiny aboard.
A large barn owned by A. S. Mitchell in Hilishbroce was totally burned Christmas Eve at 8 o'clock. The blaze caused an estimated loss of 1800 dollars, with about 1000 dollars of hay stored inside. Local fire crews responded quickly to combat the flames.
Prime Ministers Poincare and Bonar Law met in Paris on January 5 to discuss near eastern issues and possible Franco British cooperation at Lausanne. Their talks, described as friendly, lasted about a half hour with a subsequent 20 minute platform chat before Bonar Law departed for London.
Washington says it has done all it can to resolve the reparations crisis and that action now rests with France and the other Allies. Secretary Hughes’s New Haven speech conveys guidance, but the United States cannot invite a new financial commission as control lies with the allied powers.

Directors include L F Abernethy George H Disana George F Ivey E Lye George L Lyerly J A Moretz and J L Mosteller. Authorized capital 145000 with 30000 paid in. Plant expected to begin operating within about six months.
The local post office runs short of cash to redeem war savings and thrift stamps. Receipts are issued and sent to Raleigh for redemption. Since November 15 about 50 000 dollars in stamps have been turned in at the post office and thousands more at banks. From November 15 to December 30 about 30 000 dollars were redeemed at the post office. After January 1 the office paid cash until exhausted then issued receipts awaiting Raleigh payment. Approximately 290 000 dollars in stamps have been handled since January 1 with many customers seeking cash. Most redemptions are for registered stamps. several thousand dollars of paper savings certificates from other cities were also processed. Few people converted stamps into treasury savings certificates, most opting for cash.
Miss Annie Yow formerly superintendent at Guilford General and more recently at Danville General hospitals has located in High Point. She plans to devote her time to private nursing and resides at 1 home of Mrs. A D Brockett on South Main Street, with many friends in the city glad to learn of her return.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee decides to seek the administration's opinion on Senator Robinson's resolution authorizing the government to appoint official American representatives to the allied reparations commission before taking up the measure. Chairman Lodge to confer with Secretary Hughes and obtain all related department information.
Washington Jan. 5 D R Crissinger the present comptroller of the currency will be nominated as governor of the federal reserve board within a few days He will succeed W P G Harding who is retiring from the post High administration circles report Crissinger to head the reserve board soon.
At Rosewood Florida a mob attacked a house where 21 armed black residents were barricaded. Two white men and three black individuals died in the exchange and the village burned except for a grocery, two residences, and one white home. Several injured reported. casualties uncertain.
The funeral for two year old Odis Melton died Wednesday night at his parents G E Melton and 107 Filbert street home. Rev J E Lanier of East Green Street Baptist Church conducted the service. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery with members of Piedmont Camp No 2 Woodmen of the World as pallbearers and numerous floral tributes from friends and family.
The White Way Auto Supply Co was sold today by H. A. White to F. P. Kiser C. E. Miller and C. R. Bowman. The business is renamed Ki Bo Mil Supply Co and will offer auto supplies accessories and high tension electrical equipment at 213 North Main Street. The stock and equipment were purchased and the store is being rearranged.
