History of the Old Plank Road Between Fayetteville and Salem
An essay by Miss Martha Hamilton recalls the 1848 1850 plank road built for a pine path from Fayetteville to Salem. Workers earned about 50 cents a day and tolls varied by wagon type. Pay stations lined eight mile intervals with tolls of three to five cents per mile. The road influenced High Point’s growth and spurred a later railroad, but timber losses ended the venture after eight years.
