President Philip Murray of the CIO United Steelworkers urged delaying a nationwide steel strike for 45 days to February 21 to allow a government wage proposal and negotiations with the Wage Stabilization Board. In Fern Creek Kentucky an 11 year old girl Joyce Sanders confessed to acting as a poltergeist in the Henry Thacker home lifting objects for five days. Police noted several objects moved but no one was near enough to touch them. Mrs Thacker who first saw a moving comb said the girl likely learned her lesson.
Treasury agents have targeted 5 000 small time racketeers for nearly 50 million dollars in unpaid taxes and wage enforcement expands toward major hoodlums. A top Internal Revenue Bureau official cited 30 000 unfinished cases with 11 816 under active probe, naming gamblers, bookies and underworld figures among those listed. Louis E Welcher of San Francisco, a leading coin machine distributor, was cited with a three year sentence and back taxes.
