Japanese military authorities flatly refused U S demands for an apology for the illegal arrest of five Marines in a New Year cabaret incident. Col Allen Turnage informed the Japanese that the insistence for an apology stood, while Japan pressed for an apology from the Marines. Chinese headquarters announced Japanese casualties since July 7, 1937 reached 1.8 million killed and wounded.
