PALATINE IL AP The energy crisis inspires Tom Heckenbach a 33 year old bachelor to rely on wood stoves kerosene lamps and a garden harvest. He stripped electric heat and bought cast iron stoves and a wood burner spending about 300 secondhand. His annual kerosene cost is about 12. Heckenbach raises vegetables keeps chickens and four goats hosts sawing parties to produce 100 by 8 foot wood piles with friends and uses free wood from trees construction sites and discarded railroad ties. He stocks 20 to 25 tons and collects Christmas trees for firewood during the holidays.
