New Year customs spread as peas, licenses capture attention
On New Year Day many in town wore license plates on ears while eateries served black eyed peas for luck. Sheraton and Princess Cafe report high demand and Walgreen's provided peas with meals. The tradition is traced to a Negro superstition about plenty to eat and money in the year, with alert readers noting the origin. The same issue notes local film planning for 1940 with Gone with the Wind arrival expected in February and upcoming theater lineups at Center Theatre, including Destry Rides Again with James Stewart, The Earl of Chicago, and First Love, plus Gulliver's Travels on January 14.
