New Deal Forecast Faces Budget Strains and Ship Plans
A U S Chamber of Commerce panel forecasts tax receipts will fall short of expectations with total state, real government, and federal taxes reaching about 6.4 to 7.1 billion dollars. They project a lower national income in 1938, potential relief burdens, and a coming budget request to Congress. Unemployment census results and social security provisions will shape relief spending and new projects for slum clearance and farm tenancy. The Navy may start two battleships and 16 smaller ships with possible additions later. Members of Congress debate recovery, corporate licensing, and the impact of New Deal policies on business profits and recession remedies.
