President Roosevelt fixed the treasury price for newly mined domestic silver at 64.64 cents per ounce with delivery required to a U S coinage mint by June 30 1939. The proclamation covers that date only and futures by June 30 remain uncertain.
Washington reports a likely replacement for Attorney General Homer Cummings by Monday noon as Governor Frank Murphy of Michigan emerges as a possible nominee. President Roosevelt praised Cummings for his tenure and reserved right to call him back for consultation after the resignation takes effect.
In Thornville Ohio three local firms report mysterious mailings of cash in unmarked envelopes from Columbus. A druggist received 110 dollars in twenty dollar bills, a grocer 100 dollars, and an auto dealers firm 50 dollars. Recipients theorize a year end burglar sent the money as a message or sting.
Rome reports Fascists enter the New Year confident of German support for Italy to gain colonial concessions. Hitler’s New Year message reaffirmed unbreakable German obligations, while Il Giornale d Italia warns enemies in France about the axis. Mussolini argues France reneged on pledges in 1915. Some diplomats compare Italo French tensions to prewar Czech events. The Fascist press shifts to moderation to win British sympathy before Chamberlain’s Rome visit on January 11.
Spanish insurgents report two fresh successes in the ninth day of their drive against Barcelona. They claim to have cut the Lerida Seo de Urgel highway in two places north east of Balaguer and to have occupied Cubelis seven miles southwest of Artesa on a key highway into Catalonia. The campaign aims to sever Barcelona from the French frontier, with 81 miles of the Lerida Seo de Urgel route under their control or shelling.
Oscar Pitts, NC prison chief, said Roy Kelly was arrested in South Hill Virginia for murder tied to a Burlington triple slaying on December 7. Kelly, 22, escaped Oct 23 from Anson county camp while serving seven to ten years for burglary and larceny. he used several aliases per FBI.
A Crown Hill Mine No 6 fire trapped 20 to 25 miners 200 feet underground at Clinton Indiana. The men reported air quality was good and they were safe via mine telephone lines despite the blaze. Rescue teams were summoned to aid them.
Berlin reports Nazi leaders pledge stronger army navy export trade and economy for 1939. Hitler appeals to the army to defend Germany's right to live as Goebbels, Goering, Raeder and Funk outline aims and the February automobile show.
