In Waynesville North Carolina Mrs Albert Jolly aged 50 living alone on Iron Duff mountain was found dead with her head in a fireplace containing live coals. Florence South Carolina January 1 Mrs F A Kendall of Florence and Miss Margaret Sessions a Conway graduate nurse were killed when an Atlantic Coast Line train struck their car four miles west of Florence this morning.
In Newbern on January 1 a 14 year old boy Herman Coward of the Vanceboro area attempted to install a wall rack, accidentally discharged the gun and killed his sister Kes sie Coward who was 12. The incident occurred while younger children were nearby.
Two men, Arthur Joseph Demars and Charles P. Ruby, waited at the White House gates before dawn for the president's New Year reception. A Wabash passenger train crashed on a curve near Bement Illinois and rammed the village station, setting it on fire. The engine and fireman were pulled from the blazing locomotive cab and treated. no passengers were fatally hurt. Passengers and locals moved the crew to Decatur hospital.
At Chicago's county Jail a 27 year old man addressed 44 members of an exclusive Alimony club, thanking them for electing him president and proposing a toast to the ladies but urging separation. Willan Hudson Donald presided as the group welcomed 1931 with unanimous salutation.
