High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - February 29, 1972, High Point, North Carolina 7 my it take with Shim v by Paul Shinn i v sports thoughts a basketball statisticians for Carolina Are causing some moaning among the other teams this year. The tar heels Are big on assists and in their desire to get everybody into the act they sometimes credit their players with multiple assists on a single Basket. It can to be done friends. There is even some discussion As to what an assist is. Ifs supposed to be a pass that leads directly to a Basket by a teammate but there is judgment involved in deciding whether an assist should be awarded. The assist statistic is similar to the individual rebounding one. Home teams Are notorious for padding rebounding figures for their big Man to keep him among the leaders. Guilford was bad about that when Bob Kauffman played there because he was among the leaders in rebounding and the quakers wanted to keep him there. Even acc teams Arentt immune. Earlier this season when Wake Forest was playing in a tournament a rebound was awarded to an opposing player because he was closest to the Ball when it went out of Bounds under the Basket. The proper Call should have been a team rebound since nobody had Possession or control of the Ball. Statistics they say. Are for losers. And the Way a lot of them Are kept from High school leagues on up even the losers have to bother with them. Carolina by the Way has added an additional indicator of a players value. The players Are being ranked in the offensive statistics by a composite rating of Field goal accuracy free throw accuracy rebounds assists and Point average. The leading player in each category gets 14 Points the second 13. Etc. There is a possible 70 Points. Before the game with Virginia on saturday the Leader was Dennis Wycik with a 62.5 rating. Robert Mcadoo who May be playing his Only year at Carolina is second at 57. Greensboro a Ray Harrison is the top freshman with 53.5, putting him ahead of 6-8 Don Washington. A a a it was rumoured at the latest North South doubleheader in Charlotte that the other South team Clemson May have played its last time. The tigers Haven done Well there but neither have they done Well anywhere else. Georgia tech which replaced South Carolina a couple of years Back has no plans of dropping out even though it puts the yellow jackets up against some Strong Competition As they found out twice by losing to Carolina by big scores the latest coming last week. A we think the doubleheader is the finest in the country a said amiable tech coach whack Hyder. A being an Independent team a tournament and exposure like this is Good for our school. Well be Here just As Long As they want a a a n. C. State has a super Mutt and Jeff act. Freshman Basket Baller Monte Towe the shortest player at 5-7 is the Roommate of 7-4 Tommy Burleson. A Jim Mcdaniels the Rookie Center who jumped from Carolina of the american basketball association to Seattle of the National basketball association has been directed to appear in Guilford county Superior court to answer contempt of court charges. Judge James g. Exam or. Ordered Mcdaniels on monday to appear in court thursday. Exum had previously issued a 10-Day restraining order forbidding Mcdaniels to play for anyone but the cougars on february 18. Then on february 22. He issued another order that Mcdaniels who played his first game for Seattle on february 20, show cause Why he should not be held in contempt of court for playing. Hearings on both the restraining order and the contempt citation were scheduled for monday. Mcdaniels did not appear. Meanwhile a Superior court judge in Seattle monday extended a temporary restraining order preventing the cougars from interfering with Mcdaniels and the sonics. Judge William j. Wilkins ruling allowed Mcdaniels to play for the sonics a club spokesman said. And the seven foot Center left immediately to join the team for a tuesday night game in Baltimore. The Seattle judge s ruling allows Mcdaniels to play for the sonics pending court determination of the Validity of his contract with the cougars. Judge Exum after conferring with attorneys for the cougars and Mcdaniels said Mcdaniels request that the cougars breach of contract suit against him be transferred to a Federal court would be honoured. Exum said however that he was retaining jurisdiction Over the contempt proceedings. In fact it looks like a pretty Good year now we can sit Back and pc baseball another threat by Paul Shinn associate sports editor Small colleges on limited budgets Don t enjoy the luxury of repeated chances at reaching athletic excellence on a National scale. Those chances Are usually reserved for the larger schools with much financial backing and Many scholarships. High Point colleges baseball team does no to have either of those but that does no to mean that the panthers intend to let last years abortive shot at National honors be the last. After a 35-11 record in 1971, which put pc one game away from winning its first area championship High Point has been working out since february in an Effort to make another run. The panthers have won three straight Carolinas conference c h a in p i on ships something no other team has done and beginning on March 5, they will Start All Over again. Coach Chuck Hartman lost some key players but has 15 Letterman returning to tackle an imposing 35-game schedule. Which includes such no conference foes As West Virginia n. C. State Maryland and Carolina. As always a lot of what Success High Point will enjoy this season will depend on How the pitching develops. The Mound corps was hit by graduation when left handers Dennis Miller and Jack Curling turned in their spikes. Miller was a reliever deluxe and his loss could possibly turn out to be the most important for the club. A Elf we can have somebody to come in in the eighth or ninth inning to protect our leads then we can be better than last Hartman said. Pitching in t the Only place that the panthers got Hurt. Third baseman Pitcher Ron Slagerman is Back after a super tournament last Spring and will give the panthers their Power Hopes. But this club May depend More on running and defense than on slugging to make its Way through the conference Competition which Hartman figures to include Guilford and Pfeiffer in the chief challenging roles. In the infield the panthers will have their second new first baseman in two years As Mike Cornelison moves Over from Catcher. Cornelison had a Fine fall season and May give a Little More Power to the lineup. Sophomore Bob Worthington rated by his coach As a super infielder returns at second. A i think Bob is the Best in the state a Hartman said a and ill predict that hell be a super player before he a through. Hell be one of our leading hitters and he s outstanding on playing beside Worthington will be senior Bob Hickey at shortstop. Hickey will be starting his fourth season at the position and should be a steadying influence on the infield with his knowledge of the game. Slingerman will Start at third although he May be called on in the Early games to pitch until the Panther staff gets its rotation established. Slingerman was the most valuable player last season and is a solid pro Prospect. He is this year s Captain. There Are two Good catching prospects in line in Junior Bill Updegraff and freshman Chuck Sharp. Updegraff will give some Power in the Backstop position and Hartman rates his Arm As Good. Sharp May not be As Good a hitter but possesses the skills on defense. As backup in the infield the panthers have Ned Conrad and Jack Caviness a Transfer from Pembroke. Matusiak was recruited after putting in time with the armed forces. He is 6-3 and weighs 215 and could be the stopper that the panthers would need to go a Long Way.
