Signs of leveling in business shown by several sources
Business activity appears to level off at a high peak with new orders slipping while production stays at peak. National associations report February confirms a slight leveling off in industrial conditions. Materials may improve supply balance in six months and backlogs remain high despite softer new orders. Retail trade also levels off, with department store sales above last year but auto and home furnishing declines offset gains.
