Cubans Lose Wild Gamble To Seek Asylum At Sea
Three Cuban men who fled aboard a 202-foot ship attempted to reach the United States by taking a lifeboat from the vessel off Virginia. The Cuban captain claimed the men were crew members and they were later picked up by a Coast Guard cutter after the ship rammed their lifeboat. The incident began after the ship seized by the four defectors and a plan to bring the vessel into U.S. waters failed. The Coast Guard did not intervene during the ramming as the events occurred beyond the 3 mile limit.

Rep. Henry C. Schadeberg says the Army will not seek $70.21 from Ernest J. Wagner of Racine Wisconsin for an M14 rifle lost on a helicopter. Public response yielded $250 in donations and $1,000 in pledges to cover the rifle and potential legal defense, but all contributions will be returned. Wagner was honorably discharged five months ago after a year in Vietnam.
