In Baton Rouge Huey P. Long declared he will run for governor in 1936 amid a fast moving legislative session. He praised the state’s finances and hinted a presidential bid may come later. Long previously served as governor from 1928 to 1932 before joining the U. S. Senate.
North Carolina revenue totals for February reached 3,015,791.75 with a 122,241.89 increase from February 1934. Motor vehicle receipts were 1,683,964.97, up 4.5 percent, while inheritance tax show the sharpest rise, tripling from the prior year. First eight months of the fiscal year total 32,836,596, about 14.6 percent higher than the previous year.
Washington reports the ailing former Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes II aged and gravely ill as friends hurry to be with him at his side, reflecting on his long career while extending hopes for a recovery.

Winston Salem reports R J Reynolds Tobacco Co says payroll costs rise by over 750000 dollars a year after code changes. Increase applies to last week's work with 40 hour weeks payments now in process. Other plants have not yet estimated the impact.

North Wilkesboro February 28. Lowery Dula a longtime Wilkes county Confederate veteran died at his home in Ferguson today. He was one of the last veterans in the county and his death closes a small era in local Civil War memory.
In Raleigh on February 28 the Senate passed and sent to the House a joint resolution demanding a legislative investigation of the state hospital for the insane at Morganton. Senators Gravely Bailey and others spoke for the measure, opposed by Guilfordists who argued it was an unwarranted interference with the hospital board. Bailey, who had toured Morganton ten years ago, defended the visit as part of the insane asylums committee inquiry.
Alabama voters upheld strict prohibition, joining Mississippi in keeping dry laws. With 1,919 of 2,156 boxes reported, 95,889 opposed modification while 89,184 favored, reflecting a shift away from repealing liquor statutes and back toward long standing state control.
New York February 28 Former Governor Alfred E Smith attacks Secretary Ickes over a PWA demand that Robert Moses resign from one of his jobs to allow continued bridge funding. Smith defends Moses citing his work on New York City relief and park projects and condemns the move as political and vindictive.
A joint legislative committee approved a plan to raise teachers salaries by 29 percent with proposed appropriations of 20.7 million for 1935 36 and 21 million for 1936 37. The panel also recommended a 12 000 annual highway maintenance fund and examined various local bills and safety measures. Representative Bryant of Raleigh indicated the bill was not yet ready for final action.
Washington report states President Roose vouches for new mail laws by March 1 but congress remains far from action. Postmaster General Farley proposes seven air mail extension contracts expiring at midnight with further extensions possible into June.
North Carolina fair and not quite cold tonight with gradually falling temperatures. Jacksonville expects fresh north and northwest winds over the north, moderate winds over the south. Sandy Hook to Hatteras reports fresh winds south, shifting west to northwest tonight. Charlotte AP reports bureau temperature and rainfall records for the 24 hours ending early morning in principal cotton areas and other regions.
