Byrd Opposes Congress Cost of Living Raise

Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd urged against approving the October cost-of-living pay rise for federal workers, noting Congress already received a $12,900 annual increase this month. Estimates place lawmakers’ hike between 2800 and 3700 dollars, set to auto in October unless disapproved. Bills in the House seek to block the raise, with Rep Hal Sawyer arguing lawmakers should not be insulated from inflation effects.

Child Care Credit Change Cuts Some Middle Incomes

Washington AP reports a 1976 tax law shift increases eligibility for a child care expense credit while capping the maximum benefit. The reform lowers the high and low end relief and raises state revenue by expanding the deduction for working parents. The credit is 20 percent of up to 2000 for one child and 20 percent of up to 4000 for two or more, with prior brackets no longer guiding the relief.
