Bitter Cold To Ease Up

The High Point area will see easing cold and lighter winds today after a record setting chill. Temperatures may reach 34 degrees today and around 40 by Monday with a low near 15 to 20 tonight. Strong Canadian air earlier caused historic lows across the region including Mt. Mitchell and cities like Asheville and Wilmington.

Surrender ends Boston Strangler escape in Lynn

Albert DeSalvo, who claimed the Boston Strangler label, surrendered meekly to two uniform store employees in West Lynn after a 37 hour manhunt. He entered the store with a request to use a phone and asked for coffee, telling Trelegan he was not carrying anything. He said he needed to call F Lee Bailey, his attorney, and officials rushed to arrange a meeting.

Strangler Seeks Credibility After Escape Claim

F Lee Bailey said Albert DeSalvo left a bed side note claiming to escape Bridgewater State Hospital to force public officials to admit he is the Boston Strangler. Bailey reported DeSalvo flew from South Carolina to New York and intended to portray himself as willingly seeking help for his illness.

Air Force Academy resignations hit 27 in honor code probe

At the Air Force Academy 27 cadets have resigned amid an honor code inquiry into cheating. Most were second class juniors with 24 resignations reported earlier. four of the 27 were aware of cheating but did not report it. US infantry in Zone C reported 30 of 106 enemy killed Saturday as a sweeping operation continued near Saigon. Allies pounded a base camp with B52s while Marines fought scattered Viet Cong actions in the north and central highlands. Fire Rages Through Pack Square Block in Asheville

A wind driven blaze in 4 degree weather raged Saturday night threatening an entire block on the north side of Pack Square Asheville. The fire started in the Pack Square Pharmacy building at the east end of a row of old structures housing various businesses. The site lies beside buildings recently demolished for redevelopment.
