A nonradioactive explosive accident at Britain’s Aldermaston hydrogen bomb facility killed two workers and injured one. Officials say the blast damaged a vehicle and nearby building. no radioactivity hazard to staff or the public.
A proposed measure in Raleigh would add up to 34 weeks of unemployment benefits during high jobless periods, eight weeks beyond the current 26. The extension depends on Employment Security Commission recommendations and governor approval, with Gov Hodges seeking up to 13 weeks.
Patrolman Francis J. Rogers and Thomas Murtha were booked on homicide rape and kidnapping charges at the Butler Street station in Brooklyn for the Monday slaying of 60 year old widow Viola Mirman. She was dragged into a car beaten and raped before being abandoned in a parking lot.
Thomas Olsen Ramsey, 52, unemployed, arrested early today in Buncombe County on armed robbery charges for the Weaverville Bank of French Bread. FBI says $2,782 of $2,837 loot recovered from a city dump. a .38 pistol and bags found with bills scattered by animals. Ramsey jailed in Asheville awaiting preliminary hearing before U.S. Commissioner Lawrence Stoker.
Gen. George C. Marshall, 78, rests comfortably though in serious condition after his second stroke. He was hospitalized January 15 at his winter home in Pinehurst, as reported by his physician Col. George M. Powell.

Raleigh reports a coalition of local officials and business leaders from North Carolina seek a U S route for NC 49 extending to Virginia and Georgia. The effort, led by Dr Hendry Jordan, involves Graham and Alamance counties and aims for a commission request before June 1.
