In Greensboro Burlington Mills Cp. elected J. Spencer Love as chairman of the board and as chairman of the executive committee. The elections occurred as the board prepared for a planned merger with Burlington Mills Corp of New York, the merchandising arm of the parent company.
The Tri-State Medical Association will gather in Durham March 2 and 3 with over 200 members from North Carolina South Carolina and Virginia plus wives and guests. Dr R Burke Suitt of Duke University chairs the meeting a scientific program includes ward rounds at Duke Hospital and a tour of the new Hospital and Medical School at Chapel Hill. The group founded in 1898 has more than 700 members.
Sen Bricker Republican of Ohio opposes a bipartisan move to grant President Eisenhower broad standby powers to freeze prices wages and rents in war or economic emergency He argues the measure would be more of a handicap than a help Prices lifted on a 12 billion dollar annual volume of goods cigarettes groceries copper and aluminum saw early boosts OPS predicted further increases Cigarette and grocery prices may rise but aluminum products show no immediate change Decontrol of price wage and rent powers expires April 30 with Eisenhower declining extension The Banking Committee backed the bill but Bricker Bennett and Goldwater opposed the standby freeze calling it too reminiscent of the New Deal.
President Eisenhower expresses hope the U.N. will grow stronger. Aides are ordered to observe strict silence to avoid telegraphing punches to opponents. In the photo center U.N. Ambassador Ernest Gross and James J. Wadsworth stand with staff including Betty Gough among them.
At the United Nations Vishinsky prepared a reply to charges by U S Ambassador Lodge that Russia prolongs the Korean War. Lodge stated Russia could stop the war at will and demanded proof of Moscow’s support for North Korea and China with jets tanks and heavy equipment.
Congressional members urged President Eisenhower to seek Russian good faith and allied consent before a face to face with Joseph Stalin. Senators Ferguson and Smith warned against secret deals and warned Eisenhower to ensure any summit serves peace and public knowledge.
In Raleigh dry advocates and liquor sales supporters will argue a state wide liquor referendum at a public hearing next Tuesday morning. Bills in both houses call for an all or nothing vote on liquor next November 3, backed by United Dry Forces and spearheaded by Rep. H M Moore and Sen Adam J Whitley Jr. The debate focuses on legalizing liquor beer and wine in every county or banning all three statewide.
Allied forces clash across the Korean battlefront with heavy artillery and air strikes. U S Fifth Air Force reports several dogfights and bombardments as Navy units shell Red positions and battleship Missouri pounds Wonsan. Western Front fighting pushes toward the main Red line with tanks and artillery supporting advances.
General James A. Van Fleet, retiring Eighth Army commander, urged that the United Nations Army could break the Korea stalemate if unleashed. He told reporters in San Francisco he would push the army to advance and fire again, stating any offensive would end the deadlock of their choosing.
Local merchants finalize plans for the annual Dollar Days event with most shops participating. Banners at city entrances announce bargains while milk bottle tops carry the ad. A drawing for a 21 inch Sylvania TV will take place March 4 at 4 p.m. in the Wright Building office.
After the latest price decontrol, cigarette makers raise wholesale prices with Reynolds and American Tobacco leading hikes. Copper producers Kennecott and Phelps Dodge boosted prices, and gas prices in New York New England rose a half cent per gallon. The Dun and Bradstreet food index edged up for a third week, while grocers said they would mostly hold prices except for losing margins.

New York stocks opened higher with active morning trading as volume climbed on low priced issues. Avco led early activity while Pepsi Cola Willys Overland and other issues posted new highs and tobacco issues advanced alongside gains in Reynolds American Lorillard and several steel and petroleum shares.
President Eisenhower convened a delegation of state governors and GOP leaders to tackle the tax revenue split between federal and state governments. He outlined concerns over double taxation and federal state relationships under social security programs as talks begin.
Mostly fair and mild weather prevailed with only light precipitation in most areas. The eastern half saw some spots while the Gulf region recorded moderate showers and Montgomery Alabama logged 1.34 inches of rain. Temperatures ranged from the 20s in the Northeast and Plains to the 60s in Florida.
