Big Chair under construction aims for world’s largest chair
Thomasville today sees James B. Harvey at work on a 18 foot tall cement chair frame being shaped to resemble wood. The project grew from discussions with the Chamber of Commerce after plans shifted from wood to cement and could last a century. Harvey, a former freelance artist, took up sculpture in 1932 and now seeks summer completion despite rain delays.

Cement artist reshapes Thomasville with giant chair project
Harvey, a former hosiery mill fixer turned commercial artist, uses cement to model large statues including a famed 500 pound lion and now leads the cement chair project in Thomasville. The Big Chair rises 30 feet high forming a landmark with a steel core, wire mesh, and granite dust cement finish. The base will be built around four pedestals while plans await Chamber approval. Next he may sculpt more lions or pursue commercial art in Texas.
