An army investigating board began a formal inquiry into the Roma crash at the Norfolk supply base killing thirty four. Preliminary reports from Langley field and War Department officers will be reviewed to uncover every feature of the disaster.
Mrs Blanche Carr Sterne Gulford County welfare officer says Mrs Belle Steed attacked her at the Steed home in the Highland mill community striking her face after declaring she would not send her children to school. The incident led to a school attendance warrant and possible court action with Greensboro officials and a plan to arrest Steed if served.
National headquarters of the American Red Cross announced a $1,000 appropriation at the Langley Field Chapter to provide temporary financial relief for families of enlisted men who perished in the Roma fire.
The High Point Retail Merchants association met in its permanent quarters in the Welch building over Jarrett Stationery. A membership committee was appointed to recruit new members and the secretary will start March 1 collecting a city wide credit rating for all residents. The post office department will replace marine mail guards with a specially recruited civilian force. Officials say within a short time all marines guarding the mails will be withdrawn. Since the Marines began duty after November robberies declined and officials are pleased with the results.
The Bryan mansion on a hill near Lincoln Nebraska and ten surrounding acres have been tentatively offered to the Presbyterian church as a permanent home and hospital for missionaries and families incapacitated in service. The board of relief will report after returning to Philadelphia. The home could serve about forty patients after alterations. the plan includes care for East Asia assigned workers.
Paris reports say Prime Minister Lloyd George considered proposing a ten year truce in Europe at Genoa to allow reconstruction. British officials denied presenting any such plan to France and the foreign office declined comment on the rumors amid the unofficial chatter.
Washington February 25 Congress holds all bids for the Muscle Shoals war power development with transmission of the Engstrum proposal to the Senate and House. The offers from Henry Ford Alabama Power Company and Engstrum are before Agriculture and Military committees. The House committee plans hearings into the power company bid and Engstrum proposal by midweek with witnesses through Monday or Tuesday.
The four power Pacific treaty with its supplement and reservation plus naval and submarine treaties were favorably reported by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A committee reservation to the four power pact follows Harding conference terms and denies any alliance. The four power pact passed 10 to 3 with Borah Johnson and Shields opposing. naval and submarine treaties were reported favorably by unanimous vote.
The California Fruit Growers' Exchange will suspend promoting a steamship line owned by California growers for transporting fruits to the Atlantic Coast until next year. Announcement was made by C. B. Whitcomb, chairman of the water transportation committee.

Mrs M B Jones mother of J E Jones of High Point died Thursday night at her daughter Mrs C M Cox home in Thomasville. Funeral services will be from the Cox home tomorrow with burial in Salem cemetery at Winston Salem. She was 76 last Friday and had been in good health until Monday when she broke a leg. She lived in High Point until two years ago and is survived by five sons and two daughters including J E Jones W W Jones F B Jones C M Jones F A Jones Mrs Hazel Tomlinson and Mrs M Cox.
The American Federation of Labor authorized an investigation into how chambers of commerce and banks nationwide have aided open shop campaigns against labor. President Gomperg and Secretary Morrison, with the bankers committee led by Machew Woll, were told to conduct the inquiry and report findings.
Robert Brewster Stanton, New Canana, longtime Union Pacific division engineer who built the Georgetown loop in 1892 and led the Grand Canyon survey party in 1889, died of pneumonia in a Stamford hospital shortly before midnight. He was 76.

Landru, the Bluebeard of Gambais, was executed by guillotine at Versailles after a trial that lasted from November 1924. He declined to confess to Father Loiselle and refused the sacrament, insisting no confession was due. Police had charged him with murdering eleven people, luring them with marriage schemes and stealing their savings, with bones and ashes recovered from his Gambais villa.
