Life For Rape Murder Voted By House Panel

North Carolina House Judiciary committee approved a bill to impose life imprisonment for first degree murder and first degree rape with at least 25 years served before any parole. The measure, by Rep. Parks Helms, moves to the House calendar for debate next week.

In Raleigh AP reports the ERA bill to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment moves from committee to the Senate floor with debate set to begin Tuesday. The committee reported the measure without prejudice as members are evenly split between supporters and opponents.

Ship Slams Into Bridge Cutting Section. Cars Plunge Into James River

A tanker named Marine Floridian struck the Benjamin Harrison Bridge near Hopewell Virginia at dawn tearing out a 150 foot span and sending four cars into the James River. Divers searched for missing drivers as the Coast Guard and authorities investigated engine trouble and potential loss of power before the impact. The bridge links Hopewell and Charles City County and repairs could take up to six months.

Rand Corporation demographer Dr Peter Morrison reports a historic reversal in migration patterns with more Americans moving out of metropolitan areas than into them. Between 1970 and 1975 the outflow outpaced inflow by 31 per 100 and 10 of the largest MSAs declined in 1974.

Reynolds Plans $34 Million Office Tower in Winston-Salem

R J Reynolds Industries announces a $34 million project to build a 580000 square foot office tower and pedestrian plaza in downtown Winston-Salem beside the Reynolds Building. Construction to begin in late spring 1978 with completion expected in 1980. The complex will link with the current headquarters to form Reynolds Plaza. The Tobacco Company will remain in the existing building.

Invasion Imminent Says Amin Threats from Uganda Leader

In Kampala, Idi Amin warned that Tanzania-based invasion forces were six miles from Uganda and would trigger a deep strike by Uganda's marines and air force if crossed. He accused Nyerere of backing Obote's plot, claimed archbishop Janani Luwum and two ministers were killed, and alleged U.S. British and Israeli paratroopers planned a container airlift. The U.S. State Department called the charge absurd.

Gas Holdback by Oil Firms Faces Moss Hearings

Congressional investigators led by Rep. John Moss accuse oil companies of withholding gas from interstate markets to drive up profits. Texaco reportedly controls over 500 billion cubic feet in two nonproducing reservoirs off Louisiana, with six months to bring volumes online. President Carter acknowledged some withholding as possible in a winter gas crisis.
