State agencies seek $2 million supplemental budget hike
North Carolina officials urged the General Assembly to approve about 2.02 million dollars in supplemental funding for the next year. The largest item is a one million dollar request from the Department of Water Resources to aid small communities financing sewage plants. Additional requests cover ground water planning staff, hurricane protection maintenance, forest fire control, soil and water conservation, recreation, and a Brevard Music Center grant.

House Leaders Back Powell Seating with Censure and Fine
House leaders from both parties support the select committee’s plan to seat Adam Clayton Powell but censure him and levy a 40 000 penalty. Powell, silent at his Bahamian retreat, faces potential oath denial and a possible special election if he refuses. Civil action to recover misused funds may follow from Justice, as lawmakers weigh the unprecedented sanction.
