The Associated Press reports Fidel Castro has been absent from public view in Havana for 11 days stirring rumors none confirmed. A Mexico City paper claimed asylum rumors, dismissed as baseless by ambassador Gilberto Bosques and Cuban officials in New York called it phony.

Death Claims Civic Leader In Shelby

John Samuel McKnight 79 a Shelby business and civic leader since the 1920s died at Cleveland Memorial Hospital after three days of declining health. He ran McKnight & Co. a wholesale grocery for 42 years selling it in 1957. A Presbyterian, Mason, Kiwanis charter member, trustee of the Presbyterian Orphanage and Shelby School Board treasurer, he helped local civic life. He was born in Greensboro where the family still owns the original grant site.

Kennedy visits Checkpoint Charlie in West Berlin

Robert F. Kennedy capped a two day morale mission in West Berlin by approaching the border line at Checkpoint Charlie where East German guards and photographers watched. West Berlin crowds cheered him as two small boys offered flowers and a placard praised “Kennedy Johnson Clay.” Kennedy’s brother Edward earlier toured East Berlin calling it sterile under communism. General Lucius D. Clay stood as the president’s representative in Berlin.

Bank Robber Nabbed At Norwood

Walter Grover Shue 27 of Norwood was captured after robbing Security Bank & Trust Co. of 5572 Friday. He hid behind Mayor Lentz’s house, was arraigned on federal bank robbery charges, and held on 25000 bond. Witnesses describe a nine shot revolver and a two time bank entry before 1 p.m. closing. He planned to flee toward Route 27 and then to Florida.
