Four Young Men Die In Wreck At Conover
Four youths died and five were injured in a foggy highway crash west of Conover North Carolina. A car slammed into a P and G Chair Co van being towed by a wrecker, then a station wagon struck the car. Victims were Larry Nelson Scarlett 19 Russell Wayne Scarlett 21 Thomas Weaver 19 and Douglas Houser 18 all of Hickory and Conover resident Ernest Ray Punch 18 critically hurt. The station wagon occupants Houston Havener William Abernethy 46 Ronda Watts 54 Sidney Whitener 47 were not seriously injured. The crash occurred on Rt 64 70 321 on a stretch with multiple past fatalities.

Immorality Charge Withdrawn in South Africa Case
The South African government withdrew immorality charges against Swedish novelist Sarah Lidman and South African leader Peter Nuthe.
