Lithuanian editor Anthony Bimba goes on trial in Brockton Massachusetts on charges of blasphemy and inciting to riot from a January 28 speech at Lithuanian National hall. The packed courtroom heard a defense motion arguing the charge violates Massachusetts law and the constitution.
Herbert L. Cobbs, president of the Birmingham Athletic club and paymaster for Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad, was found dead today in his apartment at the club building. A pistol lay beside him. coroner suspects self destruction after an eight oclock shooting in his night clothes.
In Dothan Alabama on February 24 the case grew clearer as whispers about Margaret became facts revealing Noel Cobb’s other wife. Margaret Farmer, now Mrs. Noel Cobb, met Cobb as a Peabody College student in Nashville and married him November 19 in Jeffersonville Indiana.
Anthony Bimba Lithuanian editor from Brooklyn faced blasphemy and sedition charges in Plym outh district court as spectators crowded the docket. Judge King rejected motions to quash, noting debates among Lithuanians in the area and expressing doubt about using courts to resolve religious disputes while considering the incitement charge.
The Old Dominion pier at Beach Street on the Hudson River burned as tugs saved the steamship Jefferson. Earlier the Clyde liner Siminole with a $1,000,000 cargo of silks, cotton and tobacco was rescued when fire endangered Hudson River pier 27.
Knox Brown a Kannapolis youth and Brady Simpson 34 of Thomasboro pleaded guilty to simple attack in Mecklen burg superior court. The case stems from an investigation after a Charlotte girl disappeared. Simpson had left the state and was later arrested in Georgia. The girl testified the attack on her was not completed.
Eddie Plank famed pitcher and star of baseball’s golden era died at 2 48 p m today at his Gettysburg home from paralysis. He was 51 years old.
Citizens from High Point and Greensboro join county residents to push widening of the Greensboro to High Point highway to 100 feet. A joint committee plans to seek frontage donations from property owners to enable immediate expansion and raise property values along the route.
The Senate began debate on a 387 million dollar tax reduction bill with final passage expected before night. Unanimous consent allowed the conference report to be carried today after approval by both houses. Chairman Smoot and conferees said the treasury could sustain the proposed tax repeal, though it exceeds Secretary Mellon’s earlier guidance.
Count Ludwig Salm Hoogstraten faces scrutiny after Representative LaGuardia asks Labor for a probe into possible public charge status. His lawyer asserts he can support his estranged wife and child and has not received financial aid. The count, visiting Washington, says the matter is not of interest to him, while his separation and custody suit continues in New York.
A coalition of church officials from the Methodist Episcopal South, Methodist Protestant, United Brethren, and related bodies denounces a federal council report on prohibition as biased and unscientific. Charlies Davis, an able seaman, earned $72 in pay and $133 in poker winnings after a 25 day game aboard the La Brea from San Francisco to New York. Federal and city officials intervened to aid his claim, resolving the dispute with contributions from fellow players and authorities.
Washington report details President Coolidge attends a Willard Hotel dinner with cabinet spouses. Mrs. Coolidge’s illness prompts aides to meet social precedents, including bringing Mrs. Jardine, wife of the agriculture secretary, to the White House and hotel. In Rockford Illinois, Frank Litts is found guilty of arson and declared insane for attempts to destroy the Campbell Brothers horse meat plant. Acting Secretary White said only a court can decide if acts of moral turpitude bar admission, while Hays urged new evidence submission.
