A blaze at a Mt. Airy, North Carolina, school destroyed the 1925 building in about an hour after starting around 1 15 p m. A 9 year old polio victim who could not escape died in the fire as more than 400 students fled. Larry Adams, nine, was reported among the injured or missing with the full toll not yet released.
In Washington a Tar Heel Weekend unfolds with a luncheon at the Morrison home hosted by Mr and Mrs Fred Morrison a former North Carolinian practicing law in DC. The governor will speak at the state society banquet and a North Carolina Day observance follows with a flag procession and reserved seats for North Carolinians.
In Portsmouth Ohio cable cuttings again blacked out telephone service. National Guard and Highway Patrol observers monitor the area as Gov C William O'Neill says only the cable is affected with no other unrest reported. Guard units may be sent if the situation worsens.

A Globemaster transport crash off Korea and near the Han River left 25 feared dead among the 159 aboard. Rescue efforts continued as officers listed 20 missing and 17 unaccounted for, while pilots reported severe damage and a successful water landing.
Two safe crackers Nickey Nader and Earl e Burton were killed in a police ambush at a Forestville area supermarket after undercover officers hidden in the store engaged them in a gun battle. About 35,000 was reportedly in the safe. Detective Paul Schirmer had tracked Nader for a week.
Washington reports the Eisenhower administration remains firm against further U S concessions to press Israel to withdraw troops from occupied areas. Secretary Dulles, near the president, says Israel must modify its stance as Ambassador Abba Eban—returning from talks with Ben Gurion—heads to Washington for new discussions.
Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson advocates a six months active duty program for the National Guard at a Philadelphia dinner with Maj. Gen. Anthony J. Drexel Biddle supporting the plan. He says he is not apologizing for earlier remarks on drafts and praises Guard leadership while touring the Valley Forge area and Philadelphia armory.
Longshoremen resume work in New York and the Northeast after a 10 day stoppage. Signals at 7:55 a.m. sparked docks to buzz with activity as a large cargo backlog awaited. Contracts were signed with employers for about 45 000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association.
Japanese Prime Minister Tanzan Ishibashi resigns at 72 after bronchial pneumonia and weak heart. Foreign Minister Nobusuke Kishi, who missed the post by seven votes in December, is seen as the likely successor amid Diet activity and new political maneuvers.
In Raleigh this week the General Assembly focused on teacher pay with multiple bills proposing various raises. A 15 percent across the board increase was debated, while other measures sought a 10 percent average rise aided by state education recommendations. Reorganization plans for the Highway Commission and a constitutional reapportionment effort also surfaced, with amendments needed for census based redistricting and House expansion.
