In Jerusalem on February 23 gun amid patrols by Arabs Britons and Jews followed a bombing that killed 64 and left 88 injured. Rescue teams pulled 52 dead from rubble of two hotels and surrounding blocks while British and Jewish clashes escalated.
President Truman, on St. Croix, urged congressional renewal of the Virgin Islands company charter to stabilize the islands' economy. Firemen and fire chaplain Rev Thomas Tierney were overcome during the rescue attempt.
