98 Year-Old Man Acquitted Of Murder Charge

Daniel Phelps aged 98 was acquitted by directed verdict in Elizabeth City Superior Court on a murder charge tied to the death of his son-in-law Joseph E Craddock. The case noted the grand jury had previously filed an indictment but the court accepted a directed verdict. Witnesses included the coroner Dr W White and police chief W H Sample who testified about the shooting at 304 North Street.

Child Bride Gives Up Work In School

Mary Lou Houdeshell described as almost 14 marries Ralph Houdeshell in Girard Kansas. He is about 50 with 11 children from a previous marriage. Five of the young couple’s children were Mary Lou’s classmates. Mary Lou will quit school to care for the family and start a cook role. Her mother Mrs Maude Brown consented. Houdeshell’s first wife died last June.

Dr Allen McLean Dies In Morganton

Dr Allen McLean 59 longtime state hospital medical staff member died after months of illness. A native of Laurinburg he practiced at Wagram and Bladenboro before Morganton. Survived by widow and two children Lt Stephen Alderman McLean USN and Harriet Percell McLean. After a brief service the body goes to Wagram for burial in Laurinburg.

Plane Wreckage Found Near Rural Retreat Virginia

A missing American Airlines transcontinental plane with 19 passengers and a crew of three was reported long overdue after leaving LaGuardia for Los Angeles. A radio message later said wreckage was seen four miles southwest of Rural Retreat Virginia with no sign of life. Names of passengers not released. crew included Capt. James E. Escaped convict sought in murder case in Chicago

Chicago authorities hunted Joseph Medley alias J H Gardner a 43 year old escaped convict from Michigan serving 30 to 60 years for kidnaping and armed robbery. Chief Walter Storms said five witnesses identified Medley from photos as the man who rented the hotel room where Blanche Zimmerman was found dead February 18.
