Births Outnumber Deaths in North Carolina 1916
Vital statistics show North Carolina had 79,920 births in 1916 split as 55,512 white and 24,408 colored, with about 31,500 deaths. The white birth rate was 31.5 per 1000 and deaths 13.3 per 1000. 80 percent of white births were physician attended, 20 percent by midwives. Among colored births 20 percent had physicians and 80 percent midwives. Premature mortality in the first week is higher in colored infants, linked to prenatal care access and midwife practices.
