Fierce fighting spreads from Oviedo to the Madrid corridor as government troops attempt to reopen a vital highway and push insurgents toward the Mediterranean. Reports say heavy fire near Guadalajara and advancing lines threaten key routes to Valencia and Barcelona.
A Carolina storm swept from South Carolina into North Carolina knocking down homes in Charlotte Concord and Greensbor o area. Three serious injuries reported though many suffered minor hurts. J R Simmons hurt as dog pound structures blown away. High winds caused near complete power outage across about a third of Charlotte.
Roosevelt plan for voluntary retirement of justices gains Senate floor momentum. Measure sets retirement at 76 with pay, and adds new justices if those over 70 do not retire. White House talks on court reorganization proceed as committees review social security and labor issues.
In Illbington on February 22, convicts Petit and York from Caledonia farm were to be sent to Raleigh later that day. Warden Honeycutt and Capt. J W. visited prisons near Wallace and planned to move the pair when conditions allowed. Petit serves 75 years for murder, while York faces 45 years for bank robbery. The five other escapees remain at large with no recapture reported.
Police plan to question Meyer 20 after a 16 year old girl’s body was found near an abandoned farm well. Assistant district attorney Reilly released an affidavit admitting the milk truck attack near Down and dynamite used on an old well as evidence in the case.

Gasper D Amico 48 owner of a macaroni factory and his 78 year old father Dominick were critically wounded when a gunman opened fire as they were driving a machine at their Newark plant. The attacker fled in a car leaving the firearm behind.
The city of High Point invites bids for Project No. 3 of the grade crossing elimination job. The work, estimated at about 3.65 million dollars, covers grading and changes to the Southern Railway station. Bids will be opened Wednesday at 10. o'clock by the city council.
Senator Hill of Durham seeks a substitute to tax all building materials under the biennial revenue bill except lumber brick sand gravel and crushed stone. Governor Hoey says two material amendments will be offered to the 75 million dollar general fund tax measure for 1937 39. One proposes a three percent tax on all building materials sold or used in the state except lumber brick and crushed stone. The other would replace the chain filling station tax with a four dollar per gasoline barrel fee.
In Reidsville on Feb 22 the mangled body of 78 year old Annie Perkins was found on a southbound Southern Railway track. She lived alone and was not missed until a search began after her disappearance.
NALEIGH Feb 22 Ed win M Gill state parole commissioner displayed records here today indicating that nine out of ten convicts had gone straight after being freed on probation in the 12 years since the parole office was established. In that time more than 5500 convicts have been paroled.
Police recovered the body of 18 month old James Otto Adair with a bullet wound in his head near the Delaware River, close to where his mother's body was found the previous day.

The father suffered heat injuries Frank Lee Jr a fractured jaw multiple teeth loss a possible concussion and Bill Greathouse a fractured thigh were treated at a hospital.
In High Point opponents of President Roosevelt’s plan battle to hold a lead as 507 votes have been cast. 265 oppose the change and 242 favor it. Ballots will be printed daily through Saturday as the race remains neck and neck.
NEA Service poll reports 84,590 votes against to 44,322 for the U S Supreme Court reorganization proposal from 155 cities in 37 states. With 34 percent for and 66 percent against, the margin fluctuated little across three tabulations. Continued on Page Three.

Detroit February 22 conferees from General Motors and the United Automobile Workers of America remained at odds over seniority. The union plans a new drive for recognition at Chrysler. GM vice-president C Wilson said the main issue is whether seniority should distinguish workers with dependents from those without.
The United Automobile Workers plans to become the sole bargaining agency for Chrysler employees with drives to organize the steel and oil sectors. Six persons died in automobile crashes in North Carolina as reports from Charlotte on February 22 detail. At Haywood County a train struck a car at a crossing killing Sam Garrett and Vernon Leopold. Burke County farmer James H. McNeely was badly injured beside a highway near Morganton. Charles Denzer of Brooklyn was killed near Henderson with two companions injured. Bill Barnes, 64, died after being struck near Lumberton.
Seventeen officers and 66 men departed Charleston at 8 a m aboard 12 naval flying planes for maneuvers in the Caribbean Sea after a weather delay. The group began the voyage from Norfolk to Miami to complete the second leg of the trip.
Sheriff J A Russ gathered seven witnesses for a trial in Whiteville tomorrow of Rev Vance Simmons and his storekeeper cousin B G Simmons. They face charges tied to a two year flogging terror, including the beating of Will Inman and 66 year old Jesse Cox in the Freeland area last Thanksgiving night. The defendants are said to have been part of a hooded group that abducted the pair, beat them, then held a prayer service over their lashed bodies.
