Senate moves relief bill back to committee

Washington February 22 The Senate returned the 4.88 billion relief bill to the Appropriations Committee on motion by Senator Robinson Democratic leader The 880 million direct relief portion would be separated and acted on first while the 4 billion work relief with a prevailing wage provision remains under review Administration aims to block the McCarran wage amendment and avoid a veto as urged by President Roosevelt. Chairman Glass warned the bill is in a condition likely to trigger a presidential veto.

Tugwell to Stay In AAA as Undersecretary

Rexford Guy Tugwell announced he would remain as undersecretary of agriculture despite friction with conservatives in the AAA. After a White House discussion he dismissed leaving for a Columbia professorship or for relief and social security work, and indicated he would stay in his current post amid ongoing congressional consideration of related legislation. It was noted Chester C. Davis could depart the Farm Administration as a possible concession by the reform faction.

Revenue Chief Says Slot Machine Licenses Do Not Impede Prohibition

Raleigh February 22 Revenue Commissioner A J Maxwell said licenses issued for gambling slot machines do not block immediate enforcement of the prohibition after the legislature ratified a measure banning such devices. He noted licenses are issued under a presumption of illegality and the license fee is nonrefundable even if operation is later prohibited.

Drivers License Bill Passed by House Awaits Senate Action

RALEIGH February 22 The mandatory drivers license bill was passed by the house 91 to 2 and sent to the senate for concurrence in minor amendments. Lawmakers introduced measures including abolishing the electric chair for electrocutions replacing it with a lethal gas chamber and other fiscal and public safety proposals.
