The Countess of Cathcart signed a personal bond of 500 dollars to secure her release from Ellis Island last night. The action voided habeas corpus proceedings and returns her to the jurisdiction of the Department of Labor. American women aided her during confinement on the island.
The Countess of Cathcart, kept from the United States for 12 days over an elopement in 1922, was released from Ellis Island on a $500 personal bond for a ten day leave. She heads to federal court tomorrow to challenge the Labor Department ruling excluding her for moral turpitude.
Governor McLean issued two paroles one reprieve and one commutation today through Par dons H Hoyle Link. Bill Judd of Chatham county was paroled to complete his eighteen month sentence by April 1 1926 for prohibition law violation. Pearl Cagle Richmond county jailed April 1925 for prohibition violation had sentence reduced to balance. Steve Turner Yadkin county incest reprieved thirty days to allow clemency filing. David Nobles Pitt county larceny May 1925 sentence reduced from two years to one year.

Charlotte february 22 AP federal agents charged W R Fulmer manager of Lynch s pharmacy and H C Williams pharmacist with narcotic law violations. The men were arrested at noon and waived preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner Cobb. Each was released on 1000 dollar bond.
North Carolina and the nation marked George Washingtons 197th birthday with ceremonies and honors. Banks closed schools held brief exercises as patriotic groups hosted events, including remarks by Congressman Winter in Washington and local speakers in Charlotte.

Funeral services for Jessie A Wright who died Friday morning at his home near High Point were held yesterday at Fairfield M P church with Rev E W Jones officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A large crowd attended. pallbearers were C W Davis E S Wilson EB H Holton Rufus Wood Edward Wilson and W E Clark. Floral bearers included Mrs Jennie Davis Mrs Berth Campbell Mrs W E Clark Miss Martha Parsons and Mrs Jennie Nersy.
An alleged sniper named Carter was arrested at Bartlett after claiming to be the Omaha killer. He admitted fatally shooting Dr. A. D. Searles and wounding Ross Johnston, a railroad detective, and also said he killed William McDevitt. Johnston remains in hospital with four wounds.
Rep Oldfield of Arkansas told Tulsa that Democrats will push tariff revision to a competitive revenue level as a major campaign theme next fall. He argued current policy harms agriculture, cites farm debt and land value declines, and accuses Coolidge administration of abuses and costly policies.
House leaders warn a tax increase may be needed at year end as a $387 million tax reduction bill advances. Green says responsibility rests with the Senate if an increase occurs. Conferees won restoration of the inheritance tax but retroactive cuts remain, risking $85 million in revenue.
E. G. Mitchell of Fairmont was instantly killed when his car collided with an Atlantic Coast Line train between Holt's mill and Four Oaks. Misses Mary Lee and Minnie Bryant of Benson were injured and taken to the hospital. Lee was not seriously hurt, Bryant suffered a fractured thigh and shoulder with other injuries.
Former Illinois governor Frank O. Lowden told the National Education Association that farm population drift threatens national health and that farm living must match city conveniences. A blaze at Shindlers Prairie House in Hurlyville near Middletown New York left six missing and 19 injured with four bodies recovered. About 40 guests were asleep as the three story modern winter resort burned in an hour, with damage estimated at 150000 dollars and many occupants trapped or injuring themselves.
Mrs. Mary Hanks 70 died Friday night at her daughter Mrs. E V Smiths home on Homestead avenue after pneumonia. Funeral was held yesterday at 2 pm at the home with Rev.
