A major winter storm swept the Northern Plains with heavy snow. A school bus missing 17 hours was found near Sterling Colorado sheltering at a farmhouse with the driver and children safe. Roads froze, flights and bus routes disrupted, and sub-zero temperatures were forecast.
A four car collision near Salisbury killed Landis contractor Ross F. Daughtery, 62, and injured two others. Injured were B. W. Meadows of Winston and Frank Johnson of Landis. Police say Benjamin Allison, a Landis resident, struck Daughtery, causing a chain collision with Meadows and also hitting D. H. Fisher of China Grove.
The $5 million Greensboro i-Cone Memorial Hospital opened for public inspection today after a ribbon cutting. Herman Cone, president of Cone Mills Corp, and the hospital trustees led the ceremony. The first patient is expected to be admitted in February.
The Rev. Gray Temple, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rocky Mount, will become rector of St Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte on May 1, succeeding the Rev. Robert L. Crandall who is moving to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Charles Louisiana. The Charlotte church is the largest parish in the Diocese of North Carolina.
Lafayette Miller a 21 year old Black man scheduled for execution in the gas chamber was granted a delay by Chief Justice W A Devin of the State Supreme Court after Miller’s lawyers filed a U S Supreme Court review petition. The appeal argues racial exclusion of Negroes from Beaufort County grand juries.
George Smith, convicted racketeer in Greensboro, appeals a $2,500 forfeiture of his $60,000 bond after being a day late to begin a 10 year prison sentence for bribery. Attorney argues the appeal protects his client's rights. Bondsman S. Risley of Charlotte has already paid the forfeiture. judgment lists Smith and Risley as defendants.
U S Rep F Ertel Carlyle of North Carolina says work at the Voice of America site in East Arcadia will resume after the Senate investigation ends. He saw no evidence of waste and called the five square mile site selection a reasonable proposition despite charges of waste and mis management.
The Department of Conservation and Development says L. V. Myles Co. will locate a garment plant in Rich Square, Northampton County, employing 150. The firm with six other plants in the East expects to begin operations within 90 days, starting with men’s shirts and later expanding to pajamas and other garments.
The Eisenhower administration backs former President Truman’s stance against forcible repatriation of Korean War prisoners. With 121,000 Red POWs held, 38,000 refusing repatriation block a Panmunjom truce. Dulles says measures such as a naval blockade are being studied while talks resume only if Communists accept past or new constructive armistice proposals.
Former Nebraska governor Val Peterson takes over as acting federal civil defense administrator in Washington pending Senate confirmation. The White House said the move was cleared with Nebraska Republicans Butler and Griswold who had opposed his ambassadorship. Peterson succeeds James J. Wadsworth.
Chairman William S. Hill of the House Agriculture subcommittee told a closed session that bargain New Zealand beef will soon be gone from U S markets and urged consumers to stock up on American beef as prices may rise. He noted cattle prices have leveled off and said the panel will consider steps to bolster prices. Housewife shoppers report 30 cent a pound New Zealand steaks across markets with crowds in Columbus and Memphis.
American sabre jets reinforced a seven day air campaign against the Red air force striking at multiple targets in North Korea. Bombers hit Kangso Kangdong Kumchon and Kaesong while 20 Mig fighters were destroyed or damaged this February.
W Randall Harris 54 president of the North Carolina Press Association and Asheville Citizen Times assistant general manager was found dead in his bed in Asheville. He began as a Citizen carrier boy over 40 years ago and rose through roles including route checker bookkeeper advertising office manager and business manager. Survivors include his widow and one son W Randall Harris Jr. a NC State student.
A spot check of 20 cities found no plans to raise milk prices after the Wednesday removal of price ceilings in the third major decontrol order. Dairies cited ample supplies and competition as keeping prices steady with some saying they may even fall. while auto and cosmetic prices were not expected to rise, some mechanics warned repair costs could follow any wage increases.
Police searched a wooded area 40 miles north of Johnstown to locate Jean Christoff 24 a WWII combat veteran wanted for questioning in the death of his sister June Christoff 21 a Penn State senior found strangled at home in Frugality a mining community Det. John Carroll noted the brother had spent the day with June before leaving for a hunting trip after her body was found Paul Christoff said his son had a nervous breakdown in 1949 and left Carnegie Tech. he has been away as long as eight or nine days.

Washington reports Sen. Byrd received thanks from President Eisenhower for raising a conflict of interest concern over Defense Secretary nominee Charles E. Wilson. Wilson and top aides sold General Motors stock to win Senate approval amid anti corruption scrutiny. Byrd, noting he aimed to prevent a bad start, previously questioned the issue.
In a mixed early session in New York stocks moved irregularly with few gains and losses. Crown Zellerbach jumped 2 percent to a new high of 68 14 noting a 100 percent stock dividend while Rohm & Haas slipped about 1 percent to 130. Bethlehem Steel rose to 53 1 2 and U S Steel to 40 1 4 up 3 8. Chrysler advanced to 90 and General Motors to 65 3 8. Santa Fe held at 96 and Southern Railway rose to 81.
Senator Taft of Ohio and Senator Millikin of Colorado warn that long range military spending threatens the 275 billion dollar debt limit. They predict spending cuts and no lift of the debt cap, while Truman era plans could push deficits beyond 12 billion and near 300 billion if followed. Byrd urges a spending ceiling or executive action to curb waste.
A highway employee, 29 year old Horace W. Powers, was killed when a large road paving machine struck him after he reportedly tried to jump onto the machine and fell beneath its right wheel. The incident occurred in Lumberton yesterday.
