Revenue figures show 1958 gross sales tax receipts of 76,729,087 dollars, up 3.77 percent from 73,939,059 dollars in 1957. Gains in the second half of the year boosted totals, with 76 counties rising and 24 declining, except automotive which fell just 0.21 percent for the year.
Longtime New York congressman Daniel Alden Reed died of a heart attack at 83. A Democrat from Dunkirk, he served in Congress since 1918, was active on tax and fiscal panels, and clashed with Eisenhower over tax cuts. He studied at Sheridan and Cornell and worked as an attorney.

The Judiciary Committee chaired by Sen Lunsford Crew of Halifax reported a bill extending merit system regulations to the State Civil Defense Organization.
Legislation introduced in the North Carolina House would forbid state and local government employees from joining labor unions. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Snepp and Rep. Hicks, seeks to end union membership among workers in state agencies and subdivisions, citing a Charlotte police union dispute as background. A companion measure to tax exemptions and highway funding was also proposed, with Rep. Jordan estimating revenue gains and no windfall needs.
In Durham North Carolina Federal Judge Edwin Stanley renewed a pre trial hearing on the suit to end segregation in Durham schools. State lawyers said they were not yet prepared to answer questions posed by Negroes seeking admission to white schools. The hearing followed a December session when the judge directed Durham School Board and state counsel to respond to those inquiries.

Informed sources say two stage Atlas and Thor missiles will attempt the launches midway through June when Earth and Venus align for optimal positioning. Atlas-Able and Thor-Able designs are described as future heavy reconnaissance carriers and first stage boosters.

Vera Owen Wilson 57 pleaded guilty in General Sessions Court to third degree robbery for a December 3 bank holdup at First National City Bank in Manhattan. She admitted threatening acid to a teller, escaped with 3420 dollars, later attempted another holdup with 1190 dollars, both “acid”rops turned out to be water. She faces up to 10 years. sentencing set for April 6.
A six week tour of four communes highlights a showpiece in Henan Province 80 miles north of Zhengzhou. The Yin commune organized 68 villages with all land houses implements and cottage industries owned by the commune. It runs 228 public canteens 135 nurseries 130 kindergartens two middle schools and 36 Red and expert socialist schools. It also operates two large rural hospitals with 14 outpatient departments and various facilities.
