Highway Department Seeks Return of Diversed Highway Funds
Raleigh February 19 The state highway and public works commission would not object to returning 4 million dollars diverted from the highway fund to the general fund during 1933 to 1937 as the general fund nears 48 million dollars. Officials say the current 50 million highway balance is a drop in the bucket toward modernizing North Carolina roads, with needs estimated at 175 million dollars. The article notes past road disrepair and the impact on school buses and farmers, and calls for repealing future diversion provisions as the general fund might run short again.
