Trucks Transforming Freight Costs in the South Case
Revenue data show truck taxes rising nationwide from 39.6 to 47.5 percent of truck valuations between 1932 and 1936 while some freight rates dropped by as much as 60 percent in the South. In North Carolina 1937 license and gas taxes would cover highway bonds if paid annually in under six years, prompting calls to reduce barriers to truck transportation for cheaper, faster service and broader freight movement.
