A Japanese crew member was rescued at sea after drifting for a month following the vessel’s abandonment in lifeboats. The American tanker plucked survivors and continued its voyage. The fate of other crew members remained uncertain as rescue efforts continued.
A Standard Oil tanker Java Arrow rescued 14 of 33 crew members from the Japanese steamship Taishin Maru after a month adrift in the mid Pacific. The ship had run out of fuel and water, with survivors surviving on rats and a ship cat. The message noted the crew’s dire straits and that eight others remained missing. Captain Makatani and senior officers were aboard the rescuing vessel en route to San Francisco.
Fifty members of the cult the friends of light pleaded guilty in Munich to disorderly conduct after prancing in the Bavarian Alps wearing Adam and Eve costumes. Each was fined 100 to 150 marks following a police raid on the shores of Lake Tegern while singing and dancing.

Reports spread that an automobile convoy of union supporters was heading from Illinois toward coal fields in southwestern Indiana to demonstrate against non union miners. Police could not verify the movement as of dawn and no Illinois invasion had occurred while work at the non union mines resumes.
Dr Clifton Lawrence Whitaker 62 longtime Methodist Protestant minister and High Point college librarian died suddenly on campus. Funeral at First Methodist Protestant church tomorrow at 2 pm with burial in Green Hill cemetery Greensboro. He leaves a son Clifford Whitaker of Gastonia a daughter Mrs W L White of Greensboro a brother Rev C H Whitaker of Tobaccoville and a sister Mrs W C Whitaker of Enfish.
The executive committee of the Community Chest Fund met yesterday at the chamber of commerce office. Reports from department chairmen were approved and expense accounts ordered paid. Subscriptions were behind, so donors are urged to send pledged amounts to treasurer Miss Pearl Leonard. Committee members listed include T. Wingate Andrews chairman and others.
Mrs Ada C Stone died Tuesday in Boston Massachusetts. Burial services were held this afternoon at Oakwood cemetery at 2 o clock with Dr E K McLarty of Wesley Memorial church officiating. The body arrived by train 35 and lay in Sechrest and Son undertakers until burial.
New York February 19 AP Countess of Cathcart won a short delay from deportation as Federal Judge Goddard issued a writ of habeas corpus ordering her to appear in court next Tuesday morning.
Washington February 19 Agreement was reached today between the senate and house conferees on the tax reduction bill. The conference broke up yesterday amid a squabble over inheritance provisions but may quickly agree on a settlement before the meeting ends.
After a two hour conference the Senate and House negotiators signaled progress on restoring the inheritance tax. The tax, a major obstacle, would be revived with a plan for retroactive relief reducing the levy to the 1921 rates. Conferees planned further talks with a possible agreement before night.
Banks and all government offices will be closed on Monday February 22 in observance of George Washington's birthday. The holiday will keep institutions shut throughout the day with reopening expected Tuesday at the usual hour.
In Mosbach Germany Feb 19 AP Bergdoll the American draft evader is confined in the same cell once used by Lieut Corliss Hooven Griffis and Faust Gagarin who tried to kidnap him in 1923. Authorities continue daily inquiries into Bergdoll charges with the prisoner questioned and details kept secret. Some believe ministry of justice officials suspect foreign plots behind the case.
In Angora last night a Franco Turkish agreement including a neutrality convention was consigned. French high commissioner in Syria Henry De Jouvenel has been engaging with the Turkish government on the arrangement.
Governor McLean departed Raleigh at 2 PM for Greensboro and is slated to address the Greensboro Merchants association tonight. He is expected to return to Raleigh tomorrow morning.

A freight train wreck near Salisbury blocks both main line tracks around midnight. Wreckage cleared by 8 a.m. allowing trains to resume service. No injuries reported.
January active spindle hours in the cotton spinning industry totaled 8 358 813 620, averaging 221 hours per spindle in place. December had 8 271 576 487 hours at 218 per spindle, and January a year ago recorded 8 493 240 466 hours at 199 per spindle. The number of spindles in place January 31 was 37 843 844, with 2 803 158 active during the month, versus 37 885 488 and 33 000 874 in December and 37 866 066 and 33 180 758 in January a year earlier. Average spindles operated January were 33 334 366, about 98.7 percent capacity on one shift, compared with 37 683 720 at 99.5 percent in December and 36 503 376 at 96.4 percent a year ago.

Atlanta reports Attorney General G M Napier ruled that marriages performed out of state to evade Georgia law are voidable under Georgia statutes. The 1924 act requires five days notice before license issuance to curb minor marriages, and Georgia’s Supreme Court has not recognized out of state marriage laws when conflicting.
Gainesville Florida report says secretary J Davis announced the labor department's stance on excluding the Countess of Cathcart is final and that the full matter now lies with U S courts. He accused the Countess of seeking publicity and claimed the department's findings were released in Washington.
London dispatch reports the Countess of Cathcart, banned from the United States, has cabled she hopes to return to London for the opening night of her play Ashes, slated to be produced within three weeks.
