Rain and snow sweep across regions as labor turmoil unfolds
Rain drenched the South and Northwest with heavy accumulations in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi while light snow fell in northern plains and central Rockies. Skies cleared in New England after a severe storm that dumped up to 18 inches and caused many deaths. Amid weather, telegrams from Wirtz denounced the Florida East Coast Railway dispute now in its 14th month, noting widespread losses and the impact on defense work at Cape Kennedy after picketing. The strike involved 130,000 nonoperating railroad workers seeking higher pay, with violence including dynamite attacks and a National Emergency Board settlement guiding a 1962 pattern. The railway runs freight and operates with supervisors and trainees.
