A fire at an old folks home in Warrenton Missouri killed at least 70 residents and left 45 more missing among 155 inmates. Fire spread in minutes with a dramatic explosion and smoke seen miles away as helpers evacuated bedridden patients and others. damage pegged at 250000 dollars.
Budapest Municipal Court opened a show trial against 12 rebels including a 25 year old medical student and two prominent writers. Defendants include Josef Gali, 27, and Gyula Ober, accused of distributing anti Communist pamphlets and aiding the revolt.

The package would create a bipartisan civil rights commission, establish a Civil Rights Division in the Justice Department, and empower the attorney general to seek injunctions protecting voting and other rights.
Gov. Hodges told reporters he would not insist on financing teacher pay raises with a sales tax on food and would not force merit pay if educators cannot be measured.
